The Dallas Stars’ 5-game winning streak came to an abrupt
halt at the hands of the league-leading Chicago Blackhawks in the form of a 5-2
loss Monday night.
The Stars survived a first period in which they were
dominated by Chicago, but found themselves down 2-0 about 12 minutes into the
second period. They stormed back to tie the game, but Chicago scored a quick
goal to take back the lead and momentum. Soon after, they scored another goal
before sealing the game with an empty net goal in the final minute.
Jamie Benn scored both goals for the Stars and Richard
Bachman stopped 23 of 27 shots, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the
high-powered Blackhawks.
Chicago captain Jonathan Toews tapped in a pass from Marian
Hossa to open the scoring 12:54 into the first period. The Stars took two
penalties in the opening frame, but the penalty kill held strong and ended the
night a perfect 4-for-4.
In the second period, Viktor Stalberg jumped on the puck off
a faceoff and skated between two Stars defenders before shooting the puck past
Bachman. The goal gave Chicago a 2-0 lead 12:14 into the second period. Benn
sparked the comeback with his first goal of the game nearly two minutes later.
He intercepted a pass by Patrick Kane in the Dallas zone and
led the Ray Whitney and Loui Eriksson on a 3-on-1 rush the other way. He passed
to Whitney and got the puck back before taking a wrist shot that squeezed
between Ray Emery’s left elbow and the post.
Benn’s second goal came 3:07 into the third period when he
received a drop pass from Whitney as they entered the Chicago zone along the
right wing boards. He used a screen by Duncan Keith to foul up Emery as he
tried to make the glove save.
Momentum seemed to be all in favor of the Stars until Andrew
Shaw scored 84 seconds later to give Chicago the lead again. Niklas Hjalmarsson
blasted a slap shot past Bachman 7:46 into the third period to give the
Blackhawks a 4-2 lead. Hossa added an empty net goal with 27 seconds left in
regulation to end the scoring.
The Stars have a couple of days between games before hosting
the Vancouver Canucks Thursday night.
