The Dallas Stars ended their season series against the
Anaheim Ducks with a 3-1 victory Friday night.
Kari Lehtonen made 27 saves and Alex Chiasson scored his
first NHL goal in the win. Eric Nystrom scored a short-handed goal for the
game-winner and Lane MacDermid scored his second goal in as many games before
leaving with an upper-body injury.
All four goals were scored in the first period. MacDermid
opened the scoring 9:03 into the first period. Ryan Garbutt made a behind-the-back
pass to Antoine Roussel as he entered the offensive zone. Roussel sent a saucer
pass up to MacDermid who was headed straight for the goal. MacDermid received
the pass, shielded a defender from the puck and backhanded it over Viktor Fasth’s
right shoulder.
Anaheim answered with a goal of their own just 18 seconds
later. Bryan Allen shot the puck into the Stars’ zone, and it took a weird bounce
off the glass right on net. Lehtonen made the save, but the rebound sat to the
right of the goal. David Steckel skated behind the net and passed the puck to
Andrew Cogliano in front for the one-timer goal.
Vernon Fiddler cleared the puck on a penalty kill and
Nystrom outhustled everyone to the puck. Fasth came out to play it and was
caught out of position when Nystrom reached the puck first. Nystrom moved to
his left and put the puck into the gaping net for a 2-1 lead 13:54 into the
first period.
With under a minute left in the first period, Chiasson
entered the Anaheim zone with the puck and made a pass to Fiddler on the
left-wing boards. Chiasson drove to the net and Fiddler centered the puck for
him. Chiasson got in position behind Cam Fowler, shielded him off and tipped
the puck into the net.
The Stars were 0-for-6 on the power play, but looked very
dangerous and had numerous chances. They ended the game 4-for-4 on the penalty
kill.
