The Dallas Stars defeated the visiting San Jose Sharks
Saturday night to extend their longest winning streak of the season to five
games. The win also moved the Stars to the 8th seed and a temporary
playoff spot in the standings.
Dallas was outshot by San Jose 32-19, but they had three
times the amount of blocked shots as the Sharks (30-10). Richard Bachman stopped 31 shots
and the Stars received goals from Eric Nystrom and rookie Alex Chiasson for the
win. Kari Lehtonen is still out day-to-day with a lower body injury.
Nystrom scored on a 2-on-1 rush 1:57 into the game when his
wrist shot rang off the post to Antti Niemi’s left and went into the net.
Chiasson scored his sixth goal in six games on a power play
seven minutes into the first period. Loui Eriksson sent a pass to Ray Whitney at
the blue line. Whitney took a slap shot and Chiasson deflected in from the
slot.
Brent Burns scored a power play goal for the Sharks nearly six minutes into the third period and
the Sharks remained on the attack for most of the remainder of the game. The
Stars managed to hold on in the final two minutes with several key blocks out
front and a few big saves by Bachman including a goal line pad save in the
final seconds.
The Stars will travel to Chicago to face the league-leading
Blackhawks Monday night.
